Boliden Odda is undertaking one of the country's most exciting industrial projects with the major expansion of its century-old zinc plant at Sørfjorden. A number of local suppliers are contributing to the extensive upgrade, called Green Zink Odda 4.0, and the goal is to become the most environmentally friendly and technologically advanced zinc producer in the world.
The expansions require the heads and hands of more than 1,000 people, all of whom will be temporarily settled in a small fjord town with limited accommodation options. Our solution was to deliver what is probably Norway's largest floating hotel.
Imagine a football pitch at sea. That's the size of the three barges we have moored at the quay in Odda. On each barge there are four residential rigs spread over two floors. Together with a further six residential rigs on land, the small community consists of a total of 792 rooms, a canteen and other facilities.
